The vestibular disease in cats is the disease of the vestibular system. The vestibular system maintains balance and coordination. Vestibular disease can affect cats of all ages. In vestibular disease, the non-progressive disturbance of balance occurs. Cat health affects badly due to vestibular disease. Whenever a vestibular disease occurs then the following symptoms will appear. nausea, vomiting, imbalance, incoordination, nystagmus, and tilting of the head.

Etiology

Up till now the exact cause of the problem is unknown. But usually, it occurs whenever any middle or inner ear infection occurs. Tumors can also be the cause of vestibular disease.

There are some other factors that may cause symptoms that are similar to vestibular disease e.g drugs can induce such symptoms. The exact cause of the disease is still unknown.

Diagnosis

To diagnose vestibular disease in cats the veterinarian will take a complete history. The veterinarian will check any physical findings or symptoms appear. To diagnose vestibular disease there are no specific tests. Usually, the veterinarian diagnoses vestibular disease on the basis of clinical signs and symptoms. Different tests e.g MRI, X-ray of the skull, urine test and CSF analysis and examination of fluid in the ear canal.

Treatment of vestibular disease

Although the treatment based on the cause. But the real cause of the disease is still unknown. Usually, infections occur in the inner and middle ear. The fungal infection may occur in the middle or inner ear. For this purpose the medication related to fungal infection usually prescribed by the veterinarian. In idiopathic vestibular disease, the main aim of the veterinarian is to treat nausea, vomiting and motion sickness.

Cats suffering from vestibular disease need special care and support. They must be placed in a safe place to avoid any injury. Due to loss of balance or incoordination, they are prone to injury. Anti-nausea medications are helpful in case of vomiting. But in the majority of cases, the symptoms of the vestibular disease are short term.

Prognosis of a cat diagnosed with vestibular disease

Usually, the idiopathic vestibular disease in cats is not a long term condition. Its symptoms appear for a very short time period. The signs of the disease worse during the initial 2 days. The signs and symptoms gradually recover with time. The nystagmus also disappears with time. Different studies tell that there is no clear evidence about the transmission of this disease. There is not a single evidence that justifies that this disease transmitted to other animals or humans.
